The American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium or AmCham Belgium is a non-profit, non-governmental, and non-political membership organization that works to improve business and investment opportunities for American companies in Belgium. It consists of 600 US and multinational member companies, and involves approximately 4000 executives.

Mission statement
"AmCham Belgium is dedicated to improving business and investment opportunities for US companies in Belgium and in the European Union. AmCham Belgium facilitates business for American and other member companies through its lobbying, networking and knowledge-sharing activities.”

History
AmCham Belgium was formally constituted as a Belgian non-profit association in January 1948. Its antecedents, however, extend back to 1898 when an Anglo-American Chamber of Commerce was formed in Brussels, which subsequently separated into a British Chamber of Commerce and a Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce in 1909.

Structure
AmCham Belgium is managed and directed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors. The Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, chaired by the Chamber's president, meet on a regular basis with the executive director and all committee chairs. They review Chamber activities and the execution of Chamber policies and oversee the day-to-day activities of the Chamber secretariat. AmCham Belgium is a voluntary, independent association of business persons and entities. It receives no subsidy from any governmental body, and it relies on membership dues and user fees to cover its operating expenses

Committees
Approximately 200 business people donate their time and expertise to the Chamber and its activities by membership in one of its five issue-oriented committees and the numerous working groups and subcommittees.

* AmCham Business Journal (ABJ) - quarterly
* US Direct Investment Survey - annual scientific database of all US investments in Belgium
* Foreign Investors’ Agenda - annual recommendations to assist Belgium in foreign direct investment
* AmCham Belgium Annual Directory - reference guide to approx. 1600 US companies established in Belgium as well as all Chamber members

The Whiskey Summer was the summer of 1947, and occurred in Richland County, Illinois centered mainly in Olney and the northeast part of the county. While the issues revolivng around the summer were never resolved it was believed to have been related to the influx of veterans returning for WWII.

Background

The beginning of the Whiskey Summer' has popularly been attributed to the return of several service men from their long tours of duty overseas during World War II. The first mention of problems came from the Olney Times on Friday, May 9, 1947 when 300 gallons of whiskey were stolen from a truck on U.S. Route 50 and would continue through the summer and into the fall.

While several laws were broken and a number of abandoned properties were vandalized or completely destroyed there was only one minor injury during the entire event. That would happen when a deputy was chasing several suspects across a wooden bridge that crossed Calf Killer Creek. The deputy, who's name has been lost to history feel into the creek and broke his arm.

History

The reason for the importance of this event is the development stricter liquor laws in the county. The events have recently been unearthed by a local historian while looking through a box of newspaper clippings that was donated to the Heritage House Museum in Olney, Illinois.

Jimmy Autrey II (born June 21, 1980), is an American author from the small mountain town of Burnsville, North Carolina. He is the son of Jimmy and Judy Autrey. He has one younger brother, Alex Justin Autrey. Autrey graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002 with a double major in English and journalism. He went on to complete the post-B.A. elementary education teacher licensure program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in April 2005. Autrey's published works include the poetry book Decadently Wholesome: 100 Poems About Life and Love (2001) and the horror novel What Big Teeth You Have: A Vampire Tale (2004).
