As a Music Genre
The most important records in the development of emo were largely released on vinyl, in small numbers, and with limited distribution, back in the 1980s and 1990s, years before the style became popular.
In the 1990s, indie rock bands like Weezer were considered to be emo.
In recent years, the definition of emo has broadened. Today, some mainstream musical acts like Fall Out Boy are considered to be emo, however some of these bands reject the label.
Still, because these bands often have little connection to the original movement, many people do not consider them emo.
As Fashion
In boys, spiky black hair is considered to be an emo fashion statement.
Girls tend to have short, dyed-black hair with the bangs cut straight across, usually done by the individual herself or by a friend, shunning the processed, rubber-stamped appearance of mainstream hairstyles. Jewelry, including facial and other body piercings, is quite common and is kept as natural as is possible -- wooden and hemp accessories are extremely popular, and are, again, often homemade. Vintage articles are popular.
Emo dress is characterized as distinctly non-fashionable, keeping with the movement's theme of showing little to no interest in all aspects of society. Emo individuals perceive themselves to be outcasts and dress accordingly so as to avoid any appearance of attempting conformity and falling short, making emo a form of anti-fashion.
For 25 years with thousands of clients I've been a medical intuitive. What that means is that I can often see beyond the many presentations and illusions of life to what is really going on beyond the physical surface. In my deep meditative states I began to see that although evil does exist that most people are caught in a trap of universal pain that makes us act out wrongly. As I probed this anomaly I began to see where the crack was in the cosmic egg. It led me straight to the so-called "Fall of Man" - the true history behind the mythology of the 'original sin'.
Wow. Where to begin! Like many people I thought the concept of original sin was a ridiculous ploy by church officials seizing a marketing opportunity. But the more involved in healing work I got the more something deeper kept calling to me. What I uncovered was pretty shocking. Apparently, Bible scholars, archeologists, and historians recently began discovering a new history. In the last 50 years many ancient texts - The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Sumerian texts, The Book of Enoch and others were unearthed and academically studied. Throughout these ancient writings that went back some 12,000 years, humankind did indeed have a fall. But it wasn't so much of a fall as it was a push!
According to pretty recently unearthed ancient texts, advanced species intermingled with humans and created a progeny called "The nephilim." Preposterous you say? Impossible? Unfortunately - or fortunately - the more you delve into it the more probable it becomes. Suffering, war, violence - all kinds of disharmony that we see in our world could have come from a very ancient, very traumatic mating experience that has, like a stain on the window pane, tainted the way that we view the world to this day.
'Ancient astronauts' could have not only altered human genetics, but by mating with the primitive humans of that time, created a messy upgrade for our brains. A schism in the mechanisms we use to perceive life as well as the birthing process got drastically changed. The good news is that although these stories may not be true, if they are it could be the missing link that explains many of earths' mysterious anomalies.
Evolution tends to be traumatic. Like any injury or pain we experience, we wish it hadn't happened that way. But who's to say what creates greatness. If you are interested in finding out more, I recommend "The Genius of the Few" by Christian and Joy O'Brien, and "Gods, Genes and Consciousness" by Paul Von Ward. Graduating from the University of Windsor with a degree in Psychology, she went on to open one of the most successful coaching schools of all time, The Coaching Academy of North America.
The curriculum for this school does not study coaching exclusively as Pearce believes that success cannot be limited to the study of coaching (as valuable as it is). "Success is a combination of elements and coaching is the vassal which puts them into use." (From Pearce's personal website).
"Coach Mackenzie" as she is commonly known, has developed and created the following theories, formulas and tests: the Theory of the Emotional Average, the Psychology of Successful Life Change and the Success Predictor Test.
Biography
Pearce will report that she grew up in a seemingly stable middle class home in Ontario, Canada. One of Pearce's three brothers died as an infant when Pearce was 12. Pearce's cousins (twins) closest to her age died of cystic fibrosis during her childhood and adolescence.
At the age of 20 she began pondering a return to school. An extensive journey that would encompass the study of psychology, coaching, leadership, marketing and business.
At the last update Pearce still resided in Ontario, spending her days as acting director of the Coaching Academy of North America, creating new material for her instructors and trainers to teach (who total more then 10 and are located throughout the United States and Canada) and her beloved students to learn.
