The Engineering and Applied Science Programs for Professionals (EPP) is the continuing education component of the G.W.C Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
History
The Johns Hopkins University first offered continuing education courses to engineers in 1916, when it held “Night Courses for Technical Workers” in response to the potential for United States involvement in World War I. The part-time undergraduate engineering program realized its largest enrollments for a time after World War II, when returning servicemen and women received GI Bill benefits for a college education.
Until the late 1950s part-time courses were primarily offered at the undergraduate level on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. In 1958, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) began to offer advanced technical courses at the graduate level with credit toward Johns Hopkins academic degrees under the auspices of that institution’s Evening College.
By 1963, APL established a formal center for the Evening College to meet growing demand. Over the years, the number and variety of engineering and applied science courses and master’s degree program expanded, so that by 1983 five master’s degrees were offered at the APL Education Center: Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Numerical Science, and Technical Management.
In 1983, the APL-based programs came under the oversight of the re-established engineering school at Johns Hopkins, the G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering. At that time, eight additional degree programs were added: undergraduate programs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering and five master’s degree programs in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Johns Hopkins continuing engineering education has changed its name several times to reflect added programs, advancing technology, and a changing workforce. Its name was the Part-Time Engineering Program from 1983 to 1987, Continuing Professional Programs from 1987 to 1992, Part-Time Programs in Engineering and Applied Science from 1992 to 2004, and Engineering and Applied Science Programs for Professionals from 2004 to the present.
In addition, several degree programs have changed their names to reflect changes in focus, and in several cases, concentrations in existing programs have become new programs in their own right.
EPP is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

With the exception of Technical Innovation and New Ventures, all programs listed lead to a master’s degree. Several programs also offer graduate certificates and/or advanced certificates for post-master’s study.

MICA's two-year Master of Fine Arts graduate programs include the Hoffberger School of Painting, the Mount Royal School of Art, the Rinehart School of Sculpture, the MFA in Photography and Digital Imaging ("Grad Photo"), and the MFA in Graphic Design. MICA also offers a Summer MFA in Studio Art, and an MA in the Liberal Arts. Hoffberger, Mt. Royal, Rinehart, and Grad Photo are all based on independent studio work, and students in these four programs often exhibit together in three graduate thesis group exhibitions at the end of each year. The MFA in Graphic Design is more assignment-driven, and these students exhibit separately.
Hoffberger School of Painting
The Hoffberger School of Painting is a 2-year Master of Fine Arts program at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The director of the Hoffberger School of Painting was abstract expressionist painter Grace Hartigan until her death on November 15, 2008. Individual studio visits were conducted by Grace Hartigan as well as critic-in-residence Dominique Nahas and numerous visiting artists. There are no formal group critiques, although students frequently visit each others' studios. The program is strongly painting-based, although students occasionally also work in sculpture and other media.
The Hoffberger studios are located on the 4th floor of the Studio Center, more commonly known as the Bank Building. Prior to summer of 2006, Hoffberger studios were located on the 3rd floor of the Fox Building.
Notable Hoffberger alumni include Sabeen Raja Tonya Ingersoll and * Jeremy Caniglia.
Mount Royal School of Art
The Mount Royal School of Art is a 2-year Master of Fine Arts program at MICA, emphasizing interdisciplinary and multi-media artists. The director of the Mount Royal School of Art is painter Frances Barth, who conducts group critiques of the students' work. Work created by Mount Royal students includes painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, performance art, and digital/new media.
The Mount Royal studios are located on the 5th floor of the Studio Center. Prior to summer of 2007, Mount Royal studios were located on the 4th floor of the Fox Building.
Rinehart School of Sculpture
The Rinehart School of Sculpture is located in The Station Building (Mount Royal Station), and includes shared wood and metal shops as well as individual studios.
Photography and Digital Imaging
The MFA program in Photography and Digital Imaging, more commonly called "Grad Photo," is housed on the fourth floor of the Studio Center, opposite an open, central space from the Hoffberger School of Painting. The director of Grad Photo is Timothy Druckrey.
