EconJobRumors.com, otherwise known as Economic Job Market Rumors or EJMR, is an internet forum for academic economists. It is run by "Kirk", an alias possibly derived from Kirkland, Washington, the city in which the website is registered. Like its sister sites Political Science Rumors and Sociology Job Market Rumors, EconJobRumors is only lightly moderated and preserves posters' anonymity.
The website has been referred to an "economics 4chan" and has seen media attention in recent years for the heavily sexist and racist attitudes of its users. Many economists and academics have come out against the sites sexist overtone, including Bloomberg writer Noah Smith who sparked controversy in July 2016 by openly condemning the site and using the content as evidence for sexism in economics. John Cawley at Cornell University wrote a guide for young economists in September 2011 where he mentioned the site, stating “I had high hopes for it, thinking it might be a clearinghouse for important information. Sadly, it’s virtually useless as the message boards are overwhelmed with unrelated and offensive posts. Job candidates are better off ignoring it.”
