Founded in 1999 as a portal for non-profit organizations, TheCommunity.com provides news, projects and interaction with global leaders including the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. Six Nobel Peace Prize winners sit on the site's Advisory Board.
In January 2001 TheCommunity.com conducted an online drive to raise school supplies for students in East Timor, with partner Peacejam and Columbine High School survivor Richard Castaldo.
In October 2001 the site, led by Nobel Laureate José Ramos-Horta gathered statements from 25 of the 28 living Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and opened a dialogue with the Laureates about 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan. The site received the only written statement from Yasser Arafat about 9/11. It was named number two in the USA Today's list of top ten web sites for the year.
The web site published one of the last interviews with Nobel Laureate Joseph Rotblat before he died in 2005. In the interview Rotblat said that "the Bush Administration’s aggressive nuclear policy is plunging the world into a new nuclear arms race", and that "the United States’ development of new nuclear weapons and its aggressive 'first use policy' have undermined the work of scientists working to get rid of the world’s nuclear arsenals --- and created a danger even greater that that of the Cold War."
TheCommunity.com is producing What's so hard about Peace?, a series of interviews for television broadcast, with the Nobel Laureates being interviewed by celebrities. The first episodes taped were Bono interviewing Mikhail Gorbachev and Paul Simon interviewing the Dalai Lama. The series is being produced by Alex Kitman Ho, producer of Hotel Rwanda, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July and other films. The series is to be directed by two time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple.
In December 2007 the web site partnered with the Gorbachev Foundation and the office of Mayor Walter Veltroni in Rome to present actors George Clooney and Don Cheadle with the Rome Peace Summit Award at the annual Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome. The award was presented in acknowledgment of Clooney and Cheadle's extensive work to halt the killing and alleviate the suffering of the victims in Darfur.

The beta website of genevaonline was launched in the summer of 2005, the official launch took place in March 2006. In June 2007, the website hit 10’000 members, between Geneva and Lausanne. In August 2007, the founders decided to expand their activities to other Swiss cities: Zurich, Basel, Bern. This led them to adopt a new name: Glocals, a combination of the words “global” and “local”. In December 2007, Glocals was one of the 5 finalists of the Open Web Awards, organised by mashable.com, in the category « Niche or miscellaneous social networks ».

Website
The core of the website is the possibility for any member to organize an activity and invite other members An average of 10-12 members activities are proposed daily, with peaks at the end of the weeks, most of them in Geneva / Lausanne area. The website has other features:

* Events, listing events that are not organized by the members
* Pictures, allowing members to post pictures of member activities
