The University of Haifa Model United Nations Society is the
society of the University of Haifa, situated in Haifa, Israel.
Introduction
The Society was [http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id1382670104&skphotos#!/pages/Haifa-University-Model-United-Nations/213516832003474?sk=info founded in 2011] by current Chairman, Sefi Shalam and The Vice Chairman of the Student Union, Michael Teplitsky. As of November 2011, the society will consist of 70 members, all of whom study in different programs within the university. The Society's activities allow participating students to gain practical experience in the fields of Public relations, International Law, Diplomacy and Politics during their studies.
Activities and Recent Achievements
The University of Haifa MUN's sessions are 3 hours long and take place in the form of simulations. The participants simulate the activities of UN bodies and committees, such as the Security Council, General Assembly, The International Court of Justice, etc. Participants are assigned a country other than their own within the above committees. The participants' goal is to then research, debate, and present their country's opinion on the discussed issue in the particular simulation. The issues raised in the simulations vary according to the committees' or organizations' field of operation.Since its establishment in early 2011, the society has reached great accomplishments. The first MUN conference the society participated in was the EuroMUN, which took place in Maastricht, the Netherlands. There, its 4 member delegation [http://yedhaifa.co.il/?211-18-2589 won 2 "Best Delegate" awards] from the 600 participants in the conference. The society later participated in the IsraMUN conference, held in Rishon LeZion, Israel, where its 14 member delegation (making it 10% of the participants in the conference) (35% of the awards). Furthermore, the society plans to hold its first national MUN conference in the University of Haifa in December 2011.
Additional Society Activities
Other than routine MUN Society activities, The Haifa MUN Society works to promote Israel's International image (also known as Israeli hasbara) in various ways. It has hosted foreign delegations from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, and conducted seminars regarding the situation in Israel by both its Arab-Israeli and Jewish-Israeli members.
While participating in the EuroMUN, the Society's delegation met the Honorary Council of Israel to the Limburg region, and received vast media coverage by local Dutch newspapers and websites, presenting life in Israel according to the Jewish, Muslim and Christian delegate members. Delegations from universities across the globe were also in attendance, allowing the Israeli students to engage students from nations hostile to Israel in open dialogue.
All Society activities are conducted in English, and pertain to various issues that are usually not sensitive in a political sense in Israel. This makes the Society a more inviting environment to all students from the University, including Arab-Israeli and foreign students from the University of Haifa International School.
Sponsors and Partners
The University of Haifa MUN Society is sponsored by the following bodies of the University of Haifa:
* Student Union
* the Dean of Students
* The Division for External Relations and Resource Developments
* The School of Political Sciences
* The International School
The Society is also a part of "United Israel", an umbrella organization created to coordinate activities between the different MUN societies within Israel.

The NSW Premiers Student Volunteering Awards program is an program that was set up in 2010 (by then premier Kristina Keneally) to encourage teenagers to get involved with volunteering. The awards are issued by, and signed by the current Premier.
How the Award Works
When a school elects to participate in the program the principle assigns a teacher the role of Premiers Student Volunteering Awards program Co-ordinator. The student can then log onto the online log book and start logging hours of volunteering, and getting proof from the co-ordinators of the volunteering event. When all the proof lists collected and handed to the schools award co-ordinator the hours are validated.
Levels
# Bronze: achieved by logging 20 hours of volunteering
# Silver: achieved by logging 40 hours of volunteering
# Gold: achieved by logging 60 hours of volunteering
# Diamond: achieved by logging 80 hours of volunteering
Achieving The Awards
When award levels have been met, awards are printed and sent to the school principal to the awarded to the student.
Scholarships
Each year the award hand out Learning scholarships to 10 students from the state, at the value of $2000, who have been recognised for their volunteering. Anybody who have achieved over 60 hours of volunteering can apply for the scholarship. Schools can also apply for $5000 grants for being actively participating in the program.
