Jim Salmon is an American author, whose published works include Rime of the Ancient Underwriter.
Early Life
Jim Salmon was born in Lima, Peru, where his father was stationed as a civil engineer for the United States government during World War II. Throughout his childhood he lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Bogota, Columbia. He graduated from Carson Long Institute, a private military high school in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania in 1961. He served in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division for three years. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Social Sciences in 1968. He began his 31 year career in insurance, working for companies in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
Writing Career
Jim left his insurance job in 2000 to follow in the footstep of his seafaring ancestors. Jim’s relatives commanded Navy ships in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. He has ancestral ties to crew members of the Whaleship, Essex, the ship that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. His father sailed on the Arctic schooner Bowdoin during the 1920s. In October of 2000, Jim boarded the three-masted, square-rigged barque Picton Castle as part of a crew that set off on a course to circumnavigate the globe. After nineteen months at sea, the subject of his critically acclaimed book Rime of the Ancient Underwriter, Jim returned to the United States and earned a Merchant Marine 100 Ton License.
In the summers of 2009 and 2010, Jim worked as a part-time schooner captain for Portland Schooner Company in Portland, Maine. He serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including Northern Human Services, the Conway Lake Conservation Association, and the Dolloff Cove Association. Jim lives with his wife in Conway, New Hampshire. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

DJ Toure Toure Duncan, (born December 5, 1980), known by his stage name DJ Toure is an American DJ, record producer and drummer. DJ Toure is a member of the alternative hip hop collective Hieroglyphics and has produced songs for some of the Bay Area’s top recording artists.
Early life
He grew up surrounded by music in Oakland, California. He played the drums, his first instrument, in church and at school and later took private piano lessons. His interest in drums and piano eventually led to Djing, which he began at the age of 12, purchasing equipment and honing his skills at neighborhood parties. He was naturally drawn to production and this is where he would find his niche in the music industry. DJ Toure attended Skyline High School and participated in band and performing arts.
Early career
It was later in his high school years that Del the Funky Homosapien officially started the Hieroglyphics and DJ Toure came on board as Casual’s DJ. Throughout the 90’s, the collective gained an international fan base and toured throughout the US, South America, Canada and internationally to Germany and Japan, rocking stages alongside Mos Def, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, the X-Ecutioners and countless others.
Music
DJ Toure began producing more music for the Hieroglyphics collective as they established themselves as a mainstay in the underground hip hop scene. Subsequently, DJ Toure began to make a name for himself as a producer in the Bay Area, his philosophy of originality and creativity generating a demand for his particular style of aggressive, bold and colorful melodies over bass heavy tracks. He produced tracks for Dolla Will, who was signed to Too Short’s record label at the time and worked with many other Bay Area artists including Too Short, E-40, Father Dom, Beeda Weeda, and Goapele.
In 1995 he formed his production company, 101% Music, an incubator for new talent in the Bay’s Hip Hop, Rap, Soul, and R&B genres. Renowned for his DJing skills as well, he has been featured on songs including “That’s How it Is”, Casual’s first single. As a drummer, Toure has toured in Mystic’s band and played alongside the Black Eyed Peas in Canada and the United States. Additionally, he has worked with youth in the East Oakland Music Department teaching Music Theory and Production.
Recently he toured as Kelly Rowland's DJ and worked on "Hieorphant", featuring Casual and produced by DJ Toure (available on iTunes and BandCamp). The forthcoming “Toure's Theory: Session One” project on the Hiero Imperium label to be released fall 2012. The album's first single, entitled "She Like It", features B-Legit, D-Lo, & London and was directed by Dylan Freitas-D'Louhy.
