Why Make Clocks is a Des Moines, Iowa-based band formed in 1998 by songwriter Dan Hutchison and multi-instrumentalist Brian Wiksell. As a duo, Why Make Clocks self-released a four-song, 7-inch vinyl EP The Transient Swivel, which Hutchison and Wiksell recorded on a four-track cassette recorder. The band has continually developed its sound over the years, utilizing various line-ups for live performances and recording projects.
In 2001, the band worked with recording engineer A.J. Mogis at in Lincoln, Nebraska. The result was an album, Fifteen Feet and Twenty Degrees, released in October 2002 by New York, New York-based record label Rubric Records, with whose artist C. Gibbs the band toured in early 2002.
Accompanied by several other musicians and former members, the band completed the recording, mixing, and mastering of its second full-length album Midwestern Film in the summer of 2005; the album was recorded at Wavelab Studios in Tucson, Arizona by Craig Schumacher and released in August of 2006 by Barely Bias Records.
