Yellowbird

Overview
Formed in 2006, Yellowbird are a bunch of kids from a small town (Kiama). Due to the dire lack of anything to do in that town, they decided to start a band to play music for their friends to dance to. After a few months of doing shows in backyards and bowling clubs, they realised that they were actually pretty good, so packed their bags and headed to Sydney.
A punk band with the wrong instruments, Yellowbird generate a unique sound. best described as being big, rough, predominately electronic and drenched with an energy born of simplicity, disenchantment and optimism. Straddling the gap between late 70's punk and modern dance/breaks, Yellowbird seem to focous on topics ranging from politics, drinking, fetishes and
lust to love.
Members
Ty Rigby is in charge of Lyrics, Drums, and Synths. Whilst Tom Simpson provides back up vocals and the trademark guitar and synth flourishes which complete their sound.
Somewhat curiously, the band also lists visual artist Karina Bradbury (who was responsible for the cover art of their debut E.P) as a current member of the band.
Shows and Releases
Yellowbird rapidly made themselves known for live shows characterised by sweat, venom, frenetic stage presence and love. Initially supporting Australian acts including: Grafton Primary, Teenagers in Tokyo, Sparkadia, Yen, Pomomofo, Theatre of Disco, Dardanelles. It wasn't long before they began to play headlining shows themselves across Australia.
The tracks, 'I Like Your Hair', 'Electric Aesthetic' (which was picked up by MTV as the theme for a prime-time advertising campaign in 2007/8), 'Dance Slow', and 'Otaku', helped solidify their reputation as one of the most energetic and genuinely impressive live acts of the Australian live electronica scene.
The recently completed E.P. 'Songs About Girls and Revolustions' is the debut release for Yellowbird. Written by Yellowbird, mixed and mastered by Ben Garden of Grafton Primary and released under the ‘Standard Issue Records’ label created by Systematic Sounds. ‘Songs about Girls and Revolutions’ is a collection of 6 tracks demonstrating their trademark penchant for all things big. The stand out track on the E.P. 'Otaku', features lyrics promoting bedroom dress-ups and a soaring Synth solo provided by Ben Garden.
