|
The Woodlands Wellington Centre of Excellence is the youth academy of Woodlands Wellington FC, a professional Singaporean football club which plays in the S.League. It is part of the Football Association of Singapore's Centre of Excellence (COE) Programme, which is aimed at developing young players into future players for the S-League and the Singapore National Team by giving them the opportunity to prove themselves against others in their age group in a competitive environment. In line with this vision, Woodlands Wellington's Centre of Excellence enters a team into both the Football Association of Singapore's COE Under-14 and COE Under-16 leagues. The programme has proven to be a success, with several players rising from the COE teams into the Woodlands Prime League team once they come of age. COE Under-16 Team Most of the Woodlands Wellington and Courts Young Lions players come from the NFA (National Football Academy) and new players from the NFA will be promoted to the Woodlands Wellington or Courts Young Lions squad every season. The players promoted for the 2012 season are Ryan, Hafiz, U-16 captain Zulhelmi and U-16 vice-captain Paramoth, all who have played well for the NFA Under-16 team which plays in the youth league in Singapore. COE Under-14 Team The COE Under-14 squad features 3 foreign players for the 2012 season, namely Samuel Orchard, Raymond Mogg and Liam Collins. All the three foreigners are Australians by birth. In early June 2012, it was announced that midfielder Abdullah Muhsin had been selected to join the Singapore Under-14 national team in the Japan-East Asean Football Exchange Programme U-14 Youth Football Festival in Osaka, Japan. The festival, which will be held between 17 and 25 June 2012, is a platform to provide exposure for Japanese and Asean stars of the future and will involve the host country along with Asean nations such as Singapore, the Philippines and Laos. Goalkeeper Hafiz Ahmad and defender Hamim Arfahaziq were also selected for the 25 man provisional squad but were axed from the final squad of 18.
