Wood Oaks Junior High School

Wood Oaks Junior High School in Illinois, USA, is part of Northbrook School District 27, and serves grades 6-8 (approx. ages 11 to 14). The school has about 470 students and 70 staff. The principal is Dr. Schaffer and the assistant principal is Mrs. Lombardo-Beake. The official mascot is a Wildcat. Students of Wood Oaks come from Shabonee Elementary School. Students go from Wood Oaks to Glenbrook North, also known as GBN. The school has a comprehensive policy and program to counter bullying.

Wood Oaks has over 50 classrooms, two gyms and three computer labs.
Awards/honors
Wood Oaks was ranked the best junior high school in Cook County according to a study done in 2006 by Chicago Magazine. To be on the honor roll, students must have a 3.75 or above. Those who make honor roll are then posted in the local newspaper.
Classes
Students are required to take math, language arts, reading, health, social studies, gym, science, and one foreign language or Applied Studies/Resources. There are two foreign languages to choose from: Spanish and French. There are Honors classes for gifted students known as extended learning program (ELP) classes. During lunch periods 5th and 6th you are required to either choose: 4 electives for every semester, or 2 electives and a year-round program such as Orchestra, Symphonic Band, or Chorus, or no electives if you choose 2 year-round programs.
Wood Oaks students have a 10-period class schedule, each classroom period being 42 minutes long, except for the 5th and 6th periods, which are lunch and elective periods, and are 35 minutes long. There is a three-minute passing period in between classes. Also If one is late to class they will get tardy slip and if one student gets 3 tardy slips up the current point in the school year they will get punishment, and after the first punishment each additional tardy slip gives another punishment. each year the tardies from the last school year do not count.
Sports
Wood Oaks has various sports teams, separated by gender and grade. They compete in volleyball, basketball, cross country, girls' softball, soccer, and track. Students are required to keep at least a C-average to participate in sports.
Music
The Wood Oaks Orchestra contains Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. All the string students have lessons that rotate by periods on certain days.
The Wood Oaks band has participated in various events, such as Lake County Live, where in 2005 it finished 2nd in its first-ever competition. Wood Oaks has also participated in the IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Musical Association) competition, receiving the Division 1 ranking every year but one, 2008. Wood Oaks participates in the Just Say No Parade every year. The Wood Oaks band also marches at the Memorial Day Parade.
In spring 2007 the Wood Oaks Wind Ensemble, a group of chosen band members, went to the Superstate competition. To get in, they had to make a recording of three songs, which was then sent to a panel of judges. The Wind Ensemble then traveled to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana to play. They did not receive the Honor Band award. Two years later, the Wood Oaks Wind Ensemble of the 2008-2009 school year took part in the Illinois All-State Festival in late January, then in the Superstate Festival in early May. Once again, they did not receive the Honor Band award.
Tests
Wood Oaks students are required to take various tests. All students take the TerraNova, the ISAT, and the NWEA every year. In sixth grade, students are required to take a Constitution test.
