Woochong Um

Woochong Um (; born 1964) is a South Korean finance and climate policy executive. He is currently the chief executive officer of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). He was the Managing Director General of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) from 2021 to 2024.
Life and career
Um was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1964 and immigrated to the Philippines in 1975. He graduated from the International School Manila in 1982. Um later earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Management from Boston College in 1986 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and International Business from in 1992.
He started his career at the Pitney Bowes in Connecticut in 1986, and then Pfizer in New York in 1991. He joined the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1993, working on sustainable development projects including climate finance, infrastructure, and renewable energy programs. In 2021, he was appointed Managing Director General of ADB. In 2024, he became the CEO of GEAPP, a non-profit organization focused on clean energy programs.
He served on the Board of Trustees of the International School Manila from 1997 to 2024.
In 2021, he received the National Merit Peony Medal, from the President of South Korea for his contributions to economic development and international cooperation.
