Wolfie Seawolf

Wolfie
Seawolf is the nickname of the Stony Brook University teams based in Stony Brook, New York. Wolfie is the mascot of the Seawolves.

Definitions of Seawolves
The Seawolf is a mythical creature of the Tlinget tribe. According to Alaskan lore, the Seawolf is a creature that brings good luck to anyone who lays eyes upon it. The University of Alaska Anchorage also claims the Seawolf as its mascot, but there is no record of which university was the first to affirm the creature as its own.

History of Seawolves
Before there was the Seawolf at Stony Brook, there were a number of other mascots. The Seawolf, or Wolfie, as it is more affectionately known, was the fourth mascot to be chosen by the University. When the athletic program was first established, the teams were called the Soundmen, a name that lasted for only three years.

For six years in the 1960s, Stony Brook athletes were known as the Warriors. In 1966, the University changed the name again to the Patriots and the Lady Patriots.

That team name survived for 30 years but when Stony Brook made the leap to Division I, a 32-member committee of students, faculty, administrators, and alumni was formed to choose the next Stony Brook mascot. The Seawolf was chosen from 200 suggestions. Wolfie made his debut at the beginning of the 1994-95 school year, during the end of Stony Brook University President John H. Marburger’s term.
