Background
The Wise Owl is a chain of bookshops around Dublin and North Leinster in Ireland. It is currently one of Ireland's largest schoolbook retailershttp://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/decisions/html/2006/die2006-0002.html and employs 120 people. The company has its headquarters in Swords, Co Dublin

Currently there are 10 branches in the chain. The Wise Owl also operates an online ordering service.


History
Originally called the 'Book Centre' the first branch was opened in Duke St in Drogheda in 1986. That branch was moved two years later in 1988 to a more central location within Drogheda (West St). Between 1988 and 2005 9 more branches were opened in Swords, Drogheda (Laurence Centre), Balinteer, Artane, Dundalk, Clarehall Shopping Centre, Balbriggan, Stillorgan and Dun Laoghaire.


Domain Name Dispute
In 2005 the company became involved in a domain name dispute with a competitor over the Irish Domain name wiseowl.ie. A competitor had registered the domain wiseowl.ie and had linked it his own site. A complaint was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organisation who adjudicated on the dispute. On 29th June 2006 the panel appointed ruled that the domain name should be transferred to The Wise Owl.

In Augest 2007 The Wise Owl launched a schoolbook ordering service online. becoming the only bricks and mortor chain in Ireland to offer such a service
