100 Miles to Destiny, a Novel on Running relates the fictional story of a 100 mile endurance run competition taking place as part of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, staged on the Western States 100 course -- as the Olympic debut for Ultramarathon trail running. The Western States is a venerable and storied one hundred mile trail race that takes place in California's Sierra Nevada, on trails from Squaw Valley to Auburn, California. The story is based on conversations and experiences McCarthy has had with Ultrarunners during his travels around the world.
