William John Smart

William John Smart is a Sydney-based architect and the creative director of Smart Design Studio.
Biography
Schooled in WA, he is a graduate of Curtin University of Technology, Perth, holding a Bachelor of Applied Science (Arch) and a Bachelor of Architecture (Hon) with distinction. In 1990, he graduated with the RAIA WH Robertson Memorial Prize.
William worked for Donaldson + Warn Architects (Perth) and Gersau Architecture (France) before moving to London to work for Foster & Partners. In 1996, he returned to Australia and joined Hassell on the Olympic Park Rail Station project.
In 1997, William founded William Smart Design, which later changed its name to Smart Design Studio. The practise has a diverse portfolio of modern residential, commercial and cultural projects. His buildings have received critical acclaim and a number of prestigious awards, including from the Australian Institute of Architects.
