The Whelan Bowl Solution is a playoff proposal for NCAA Division I football. The now popular idea is championed by freelance sports writer Justin Whelan of North Olmsted, Ohio.
The WBS calls for an eight team playoff to decide the national champion. In such a playoff, seven games requiring seven sites will be needed. Four sites, in the form of the current Bowl Championship series, would be easy to select (Nokia Sugar Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl). The remaining three bowl sites would be determined by how much money they have brought in in the past, and they would join the four other bowls to create the seven NCAA Football Championship Tournament games.
The Championship tournament would be three rounds, and thus would take three weeks to play. To avoid conflicts with final exams, the first round would be played the Friday and Saturday after December 25. The earliest these games could be played is December 26 and 27, and the latest is January 1 and 2.
The second round, consisting of two games, would be played the following Saturday. The earliest date for this game would be January 3, and the latest date would be January 9.
The Championship game would be played on the next Saturday. The game would fall between the dates January 10 and January 16.
The seven NCAA Football Championship Tournament sites would follow a rotation, guaranteeing that each bowl would be the host for the National Championship once every seven years.
Non-playoff bowls would remain popular, as they would fill the weekdays between Tournament games. Often, New Year's Day will fall on a non-playoff day and non-playoff bowls will be played.
Eight teams would gain access to the tournament each year in the same fashion that they are currently selected for Bowl Championship Series games.
