We Have a Voice

We Have a Voice: An Anthology of African and Caribbean Student Writing in BC is a student-founded project created to promote African and Caribbean studies and awareness in British Columbia. The anthology was founded in October 2005 and has a release date of July 2, 2006.
About the Project Summary
We Have a Voice (WHAV) is a student driven, created, and produced collection of writing founded at the University of British Columbia. The anthology features creative and academic writings that focus, discuss, and/or explore academic and personal issues of the African continent and/or transnational experience, and the Caribbean and/or Caribbean transnational experience. The purpose of this project is to shed light on the experiences of BC past, current and future students of this descent. All proceeds from sales of WHAV will go towards the creation of an African & Caribbean Studies Resource library at UBC.
Purpose
The purpose of We Have a Voice is to raise awareness and promote the importance of African and Caribbean studies/resources in British Columbia, through the writings of post-secondary students of African and Caribbean descent.
We Have a Voice is a student driven, created, and produced project which includes all post-secondary students who self-identify as being of African or Caribbean descent.
The anthology will feature creative and academic writings that focus, discuss, and/or explore academic and personal issues of the African continent and/or transnational experience, and the Caribbean and/or Caribbean transnational experience. This will not only raise awareness of African and Caribbean studies in BC at the bureaucratic level, but will also give these students and their peers a voice through their own rendering of their experience.
This project is not only important for those of African or Caribbean heritage. Issues of the African and Caribbean Diaspora are an integral part of Canadian history when exploring historical communities from BC to Nova Scotia.
The scope of this project will eventually be widened beyond the post-secondary arena. Future anthologies will feature the writing of all members of the African Diaspora within BC, or even nationwide and internationally.
We Have a Voice is the first project of its kind in BC. Creating a cohesive body of writing by students of African and Caribbean descent is a positive, dynamic, and collaborative way of contributing to the effort of bringing issues of Africa and the Diaspora to the post-secondary environment.
