Washington Home and Garden Magazine

Washington Home and Garden Magazine is a local publication that focuses on beautiful homes and gardens around the Washington Metro Area, including much of Maryland and Northern Virginia. The magazine comes out four times a year: early spring, late spring, early fall and late fall. Publisher Jerry Cave, who started his career in radio advertising with WTOP news radio, launched Washington Home & Garden magazine in 2003. Presently the magazine has a circulation of roughly 100,000.
In the summer of 2008, Washington Home & Garden launched its revamped website, www.whgmag.com, an upgrade that saw the addition of blogs, a photo gallery, a slew of web resources and a community forum. Washington Home & Garden is among the first publications of its kind in the area to incorporate a "Web 2.0" approach to its website, or as Cave puts is, "Whereas five years ago we were a magazine that happened to have a website, we are now a website that happens to produce a magazine."
Online Presence
The newspaper world has witnessed the death of such national newspapers as Denver's Rocky Mountain News and the Seattle Post Intelligencer, while other heavy hitters such as the Chicago News Tribune and Los Angeles Times have sought bankruptcy. While magazines have not experienced an identical decline, several titles have struggled. The home and garden niche was hit especially hard by the economic slump that reached all-time lows at the end of 2008, early 2009.
In an effort to keep ahead of the curve, Washington Home & Garden began building its online presence years back and has made a concentrated effort recently to increase web exposure through search engine optimization. Additionally, the website has become a source of advertising revenue. Currently the website receives roughly 30,000 unique visits each month.
Gardens 'n' Gardening
One of the staples of the Washington Home & Garden website is its Gardens 'n' Gardening blog, a daily digest of garden news, pictures, tips and information maintained by Nikki Smith, who is the magazine's web and magazine editor.
Home + Design
The Home + Design blog offers a glimpse at some of the Washington Metro Area's most beautiful homes, while also offering tips and information on home improvement projects, investing in the home and residential interior designers. It is a daily offering of photos and news, also maintained by the editor of Washington Home & Garden.
