Vlasopulos family

Vlasopoulos family is a historical Greek dynasty of Corfu.
( in Greek), (Vlasopulo in Italian) has originated from Byzantine empire in the presence of centuries in the region of Peloponnese, Ithaca and Corfu. In Corfu settled in 1555 after the exodus of some members from Ithaca due to the situation prevailed at that time in Greece. Soon several family members Vlassopoulou excelled in various posts of Venetian society in Corfu as in politics, literature and the arts. In 1642 the family Vlassopoulou has registered in the Golden Book of the nobility of Corfu (Libro d'Oro). Informally, the family retained the title of count. This particular title is not ever been given officially by the council of nobles of Corfu, but the family has the title due to of blood ties it had with other large families of Corfu as the noble family Markora and also noble family Bulgari which they had the title. The family had blood ties with Kapodistrias family by marriage of members of two families. Member of the same family is the greek writer Gerasimos Markoras.
In 1967, some family members had expressed a desire to move the courts against the Greek government to elicit a de facto recognition of the title of count but it was not done because of the coup under thought that would cause the Greek people.
According to documents and scrolls which are kept in the historical record of Corfu seems the family had a strong relationship with the clergy and many members have various ecclesiastical offices. Today the family Vlasopulos has members in Corfu, Limnos, Chios and Athens as well as in foreign countries like the U.S.A. and Germany.

Since 1920 the family has established a base register (private contract) which forced the female members to adopt the surname of the dynasty to eliminate the risk of losing the surname over the years and there are members with compound name. Today the surname of the family adopt and male members which are connected with the family through their mothers.
