Vipe

ViPE, a word that comes from a combination of the latin word Vita (=life) and the initials of "Virtual Planet Earth", is the proposal-idea of Christos Melissidis, a Cranfield University MSc student, that won the first prize in the Grid Computing Now Competition 2008 named "Grid Computing for a Greener Planet" for the non-professional track.
Melissidis wants to create a virtual ecosystem in order to solve various environmental problems. The idea is to feed real time data derived from various data sources, such as the weather channel and sensor networks, into the virtual ecosystem while measuring its response. In the virtual ecosystem several things can take place, such as scientific experiments aiming for solutions.
Judges said that Melissidis's idea represents something of a 'grand challenge'.
Christos Melissidis has been appointed an industry mentor to help him progress his idea.
