The Muskogee, Oklahoma Banking Market is defined as including the Muskogee RMA and the remainder of Muskogee County; all of Cherokee County; the town of Wagoner in Wagoner County; and the town of Checotah in McIntosh County (Vian State Bank, Vian, Oklahoma, CFR, 1996, reaffirmed in BOK Financial Corporation, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1999).

Vian State Bank

In 1996, Vian State Bank of Oklahoma, a state bank since 1909, became the new owner of a Muskogee, Oklahoma and Tahelquah, Oklahoma branch of Superior Federal Bank the proposal was approved by the Federal Reserve.

Superior Federal Bank

Superior Federal Bank, a Fort Smith, Arkansas financial institution was under the umbrella of Boatmen's Bancshares family tree of banks, during this time-frame of banking history. Superior Federal had just named as the receiver of a failed Muskogee, Oklahoma savings and loan, Cimarron Federal Savings and Loan Association of Muskogee.

Boatmen's Bancshares

Boatmens had just purchased Fourth Financial, which owned another Muskogee banking institution, Bank IV of Oklahoma. Because Superior Federal was a Boatmen's company, it put Boatmens over the share limit that it could own in the Muskogee, Oklahoma banking market, so therefore it forced Superior Federal to sell off several branches.

Vian State Bank changing name to Armstrong Bank

The board of directors of Vian State Bank have announced the name
of the bank will change to Armstrong Bank

"The decision was based on the rich heritage of the bank in its earlier years under the leadership of Robert W. Armstrong and the Armstrong family," said Duwayne Briley, Vian State Bank chief executive officier.

The Armstrong family has been a part of eastern Oklahoma since before statehood, he added. Bank founder Robert Walker Armstrong came to Oklahoma Territory from Kansas in 1890.

Glen Armstrong, chairman of the board, first began working for the family bank in 1937.

Locations

The name change will affect all Vian State Bank locations in Gore, Oklahoma, Muldrow, Oklahoma, Stilwell, Oklahoma, Vian, Oklahoma, Warner, Oklahoma, Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, and two additional locations in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The name change take affect in May of 1996.
