Vertical Chromatography

Experiment
you need:
chromatography paper
pencil
250 cm3 beaker
glass rod / pencil
different coloured inks

method
1. make a horizontal pencil line about 1 cm from the bottom of a rectangular piece of chromatography paper
2. place up to 4 small ink spots on the line at equal distances apart.
3. Carfully sellotape the opposite end of the paper to a glass rod or pencil
4. suspend the paper so the bottom edge is just touching the water in the bottom of a large beaker but the pencil line and ink spots are above the water's surface
5. allow to develop and remove from the water when the water is within 1 cm of the rod/pencil
6. leave to dry.
