VCMC Motorsport Club

About
VCMC Motorsport Club is a racing and high performance driving club based in Vancouver, BC.
VCMC = Vancouver Chinese Motorsports Club

History
The club was founded in 1982 by Joe Cheng and Sam O’Young as the Vancouver Chinese Motorsport Association in an effort to address the growing number of Asian residents in Vancouver who were also serious motorsports enthusiasts. Sam O'Young, native of Tsingtao, moved to Hong Kong in 1949 to escape the Cultural Revolution. When he moved to Vancouver in 1967, he had a dream of being an aircraft engineer with time to work on cars, his passion. O’Young was a successful road racer in the 1970’s competing in Production and GT class cars in an Alfa Romeo GT before switching to Honda. Joe Cheng, also an engineer, runs a contracting company and has been a winning autocrosser since the late 1970’s.

The club itself started with about ten members but has grown to over 300 in recent years. During this time, VCMC developed its own driver training program. In 1986, “FastLines”, the club newsletter was launched and it ran until 1997 when a website became the primary means of communication among club members. A web forum followed in 2000 and is one of the most active motorsport forums in Canada.

In 2002, the club re-branded itself as VCMC Motorsport Club to reflect a broader appeal. The driver training program was named “Velocity Driver Development”.

In 2007, VCMC won the bid to host the Canadian AutoSlalom Championship.

Activities
VCMC’s main activity is autocross events. They host approximately 16 events each year. Members also participate in track days hosted by other clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest.
