Company History
The company was founded in 2003 by A.J. Keilty, who currently serves as the President & CEO. The inspiration to create Varsity Properties came to Keilty when he and his friends attempted to look for a home to rent near Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, while he was studying Commerce at the Queen’s School of Business. Keilty’s business model was to bring hotel quality properties and professional housing services to the Canadian off-campus student housing market.
Growth
Since its inception, Varsity Properties has included the cost of housekeeping services within the rents its residents pay. The company’s first property was a 7-bedroom single family home. The firm began developing properties in 2005 and each year undertook larger projects near Queen’s University. In 2014 the firm opened its first community outside Kingston, Ontario when it opened Varsity Oshawa, a 464 bedroom community near UOIT and Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario. In 2015 the firm opened its next community when it opened Varsity Oshawa, a 460 bedroom community near Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. The firm now provides housing to 1,400 residents in 25 buildings in 3 cities.
