V. K. Govindan

Dr. V. K. Govindan (born 30 April 1950) is a retired professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Calicut.
Early life
On 30 April 1950, Govindan was born in Vallikkunnu, India.
Education
Govindan received a bachelor's degree and a master's degrees in electrical engineering from Regional Engineering College Calicut (now NIT Calicut) in the year 1975 and 1978, respectively. Govindan has obtained PhD degree from an institute in India, IISc Bangalore.
Career
Govindan has more than 35 years of teaching experience at under graduate and post graduate levels. He served as Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, NIT Calicut during the years 2000 to 2005. He was Dean Academic of NIT Calicut during 2011 to 2014.
Govindan's research areas include Image processing, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Data Compression, Document Imaging and Operating Systems.
Govindan devoted his life to study, teaching and doing research. He has more than 165 research publications including 90 international Journal papers, and authored 20 books. He has evaluated many PhDs thesis and produced seven PhDs. Currently, he is guiding ten PhD scholars. He has also refereed many papers for Journals and conferences.
Govindan has also served as resource person in the following projects:
* As Principal Investigator of Project entitled Development of Infrastructure for Image processing and character recognition research.
* As co-investigator of project entitled Design and Development of an ECG monitoring equipment and diagnostic expert.
* As Principal Investigator of project entitled Human face recognition from photographs.
* As Principal Investigator of project entitled As400 mainframe and Application Center, under thrust area.
* As Co-ordinator of Project entitled Imaging and vision Lab under MODROB.
* As Principal Investigator of project entitled Design and development of adaptive wavelet compression algorithms, ongoing Research project.
