USS Khai Tam Technical Orientation Manual

Set in the Star Trek universe in the time frame of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the USS Khai Tam Technical Orientation Manual, Intergalactic Press 1994, is a "fiction reference" book by Kevin McNulty and Colin Toenjes about the workings of the first hybrid Klingon-Fedration starship. No such ship has ever been seen in any version of the series, nor any of the movies, thus making the fan-generated work non-canon. The idea for the ship began with the Tallahassee, FL chapter of Starfleet: The International Star Trek Fan Association, the .

Contents
USS Khai Tam Technical Orientation Manual features detailed technical information about the first jointly designed Federation-Klingon starship. Proposed as a demonstration of the "New Alliance" between the two historical foes, the technology sharing project grew from the idea to design a ship capable of matching the threat of the then newly discovered Borg. The combined technology provides the heavy cruiser with striking exterior visuals well-documented in the book's illustrations: a Galaxy-class saucer section powered by Klingon warp nacelles placed on the ends of huge swept wings.

Beginning with a detailed construction chronology and ending with an itemized list of personnel assignments, the 92-page manual covers everything from propulsion and weapon systems to auxiliary craft and crew resource allocation. A few of the features of the manual are:

* Detailed floor plans of the Main Bridge, Combat Information Center, Main Engineering, Communications Center, Sickbay Complex, and Science Labs.
* Cutaway views of photon torpedoes, assault shuttlecraft, Klingon warp nacelles, and more.
* Guidelines for combat operations, recreational programs, flight operations, and resource allocation.
* Complete history of the development and construction of the USS Khai Tam and her sister ships of the Qapla'-class: Qapla, Targ, and Relentless.

History
In 1993, the members of the USS Khai Tam Starfleet chapter had the basic idea to write a technical manual for the Khai Tam as a way to "sell" the idea to the international club to officially sanction this non-canon original design for a Trek-universe starship. The problem was that no one had the time or resources to work on the project. In April of 1993, Kevin McNulty joined the Khai Tam and offered to help. A stay-at-home-dad at the time, McNulty had the time to work, coupled with writing and computer illustration experience. He, the Khai Tam's Chief Engineer, Colin Toenjes, and other club members began work on the book later that year.

The manual was completed in six months. Being well satisfied with their work, the ship thought that perhaps they may be able to sell it at Star Trek Conventions via established dealer channels. In early 1994, Kevin and Colin approached Mike Kott of with a rough draft of the book. Not only was Kott interested in selling it, he offered to publish it. This was the crowning achievement of the design team, and a published, bound, and autographed copy was sent off to Starfleet in June of 1994. Shortly thereafter, approval was given for other chapters to select the Qapla'-class starship for their own chapters. At about the same time, McNulty presented a copy of the manual autographed by chapter members to Star Trek crew member and designer, Michael Okuda.

As of 2007, the book was still available through as well as via the Internet.
