Urban Gypsies

Urban Gypsies are an instrumental Jazz Latin fusion guitar band. Formed in 1998, the group started with Gavin Libotte and Glenn Rogers in Perth, Western Australia. The music incorporates jazz fusion mixed with world music influences and Latin guitar styles. The Band has supported the Beuna Vista Social Club, Cassandra Wilson and Kristina Olsen, to name a few. They have recorded three CD’s as independent artists. The current band line up consists of Gavin Libotte (rhythm and lead guitar), Dieter Kleemann (rhythm and lead guitar) Rodrigo Salgado (bass guitar) and Stuart Henderson (drums and percussion).
The Band is based in Sydney NSW Australia.

Biography
Gavin Libotte and Glenn Rogers started the band as a guitar duo busking on the streets of Fremantle and Perth in Western Australia. They went on to play at The Perth Entertainment Centre, The Perth Superdome, His Majesty's Theatre, and The Universal Bar. Influenced by John Mclaughlin, Ottmar Liebert, Paco de Lucia, Sylvain Luc and many other guitar greats, the music represented an exciting direction in fusion and funky grooves mixed with world music influences, jazz and flamenco.
They have played at numerous festivals and clubs including Bellingen Global Carnival. They have have supported Buena vista social club, Cassandra Wilson,Kristina Olsen and many more...
They have released three CD’s to date. Gypsy Fever 2000, Sauvage 2003 and Beautiful Catastrophe 2008. </ref>. They were inspired to release their first CD Gypsy Fever in 2000. Gavin Libotte moved to Sydney in 2003 and started working with Singer/Guitarist Simon Phillips. Together they recorded the album Sauvage, an instrumental guitar world music album, released through MGM and promoted through SBS, local media, and the ABC. Sauvage received a 3/4 star review in The Sydney Morning Herald.
The Urban Gypsies performed at various festivals and venues throughout NSW and neighbouring states. In 2006 Guitarist Gordon Tan replaced Simon Phillips. The duo worked with many local Sydney musicians including Joseph Tawadros, Rodrigo Galvao, Jess Ciampa, Emile Nelson, Craig Norton, Jess Randall, Kristina Olsen and many more. Urban Gypsies recorded their third CD Beautiful Catastrophe with sound engineer Dave Russell in 2008. Three tracks from the new CD were used on the Café Sydney Sundays CD released in 2008.
Dieter Kleeman (guitar) has recently replaced Gordon Tan, joining Gavin and the band in 2008. Urban Gypsies now performs as a quartet at concert venues around Sydney. Consisting of two Godin nylon string guitars, bass and drums/cahon, Urban Gypsies have performed at the Vanguard, Notes, and will soon release their official album Beautiful Catastrophe at the Basement in October, 2009.
