Upstream Ideas is an American media organization that runs a series of web and radio-based programs discussing political and policy issues facing Chicago, the state of Illinois, and the United States. It is owned by and its shows are hosted by Dan Proft, a Chicago-based radio talk show host. The goal of the program is to make Illinois and the U.S. "a bit more free, a bit more just and a bit more civilized." Upstream Ideas is made up of four unique web and radio programs: Against the Current, Illinois Rising, Connecting the Dots and :60 Of Sanity. According to its website, "Our aim at Upstream Ideas is to do just as Mises suggested by turning the dial on how you look at the political and policy issues facing Illinois, Chicago and our nation. We present new ideas that inform salient policy decisions, start new conversations and move beyond partisan politics all while challenging the status quo." Programs Against the Current Against the Current is a content series of in-depth conversations between Proft and guests who are experts at the issues being discussed. The format is a sit-down, one-on-one interview smoking cigars in front of a library-looking background. Illinois Rising The program is described as "an honest analysis of the problems we face." It is sponsored by the think tank Illinois Policy Institute (IPI). Proft and policy experts from IPI break down political and policy issues affecting Illinois. Illinois Rising is recorded in the Chicago-based AM 560 radio studio. On February 1, 2017, Proft ran a segment called "Why Is the Suicide Rate Among Chicago Police So High?" :60 Of Sanity In this program, Proft makes short commentaries for the Salem Radio Network on issues of the day.
