Upsilon Nu Alpha (UNevAsk) is one of the first intercollegiate fraternities established in Coastal Carolina by African Americans. Founded in February 2001 on the campus of Elmsey A. Laney in Wilmington, North Carolina, Upsilon Nu Alpha has initiated an impressive amount of men into the organization and closely affiliated with other fraternities. The fraternity utilizes suits and character from playing cards to represent their organization and ranks within each one f their chapters. The founders of the organization (who are known as the 17 stones) all hail from parts of the United States even though the initial creation was in North Carolina the contributions from the other fathers left them to receive the honors of further creating it. The first expansion of the fraternity came when chapters where chartered in Savannah, GA and Winston Salem, NC. It now has Chapters known as Houses in Los Angeles CA, Ft Luarterdale FL, Los Vegas NV, Atlanta GA, Wichita KS to name a few. Many believed Upsilon Nu Alpha came to be under the suggestion that other BGLOs where a little outdated or out of touch with the modern day world. It is heavily taught that this being the reason behind the creation is false. The creation was behind the fact that a lot of the history in African American studies were being left out in today’s schools and that were not enough people to help counter a lot of the stereotypes being placed on people of all color. The usage of Upsilon today is to inform the youth and ill-informed about; facts, history, and problems surrounding the African American community , Acting as peer mediators, and liaison between the city officials and communities surrounding each house. The pledging process is broken down into three phases; Black, Red, and Green. After Black phase the pledged will be able to choose a suit which fits their interest best. All chapters of Upsilon Nu Alpha consist of the four suits that are in playing cards. Each suit is specified to a job within the fraternity’s workings.
