Upol Islam

Russell Mahmud a.k.a Upol Islam (February, 1980) was born in a family of music and literature. His father was a famous lyricist Hena Islam, mother was the famous playback singer and freedom fighter (member of Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendro) Uma Islam.
In today’s Bengali music scene Upol is not a newcomer. He is not a rising star who still has to prove himself to his peers. Despite the fact that he lived outside Bangladesh most of his life, over the years, he miraculously managed to win the hearts of many Bangladeshis. Bangladesh did not see the face of Upol, they’ve just heard his voice, his lyrics, tune, and composition - and these absolutely did it for them. They fell in love with Upol and his music. Couple of fan pages in facebook and in other websites dedicated to this great singer supplements this fact.
Upol worked on many albums, wrote and tuned for quite a few singers, and was the co-producer of two audio albums. One fact seems always true with Upol, no matter what type of music or time of the year - Upol knows how to produce hit songs. Every single song written and composed by him is a huge success. FM radio stations in Bangladesh play his songs every single day. His signature songs so far are “Ganga”, “Tor Jonno Ami Bonno”, and “Jibon Gelo.”
Discography
Upol’s very first album was a duo. Pantho Kanai and he both sang five songs each to produce “Ke Tumi” (2001). It was released by CMV. Lack of proper marketing and promotions failed the album to create any noticeable vibe. After that Upol was completely out of the scene as he was then residing in Texas, USA.
Another very famous composer Fuad al Muqtadir met Upol in the year 2002 in New York. They decided to work together and thus produced “Kranti” (2003), released by Arshee Music Bd. It was an alternative rock album which featured a new female singer, Anila Naz. Shihab Morshed wrote most of the songs. Upol wrote two and assisted in others. Fuad was in complete charge of composition and arrangement. The album was widely appreciated by the listeners. Apparently it went on to win some awards in Bangladesh.
In year 2006 a various artists album produced by Fuad called Variation Number 25 included two songs written, tuned, and sung by Upol Islam. “Ganga” & “Meye” were instant radio hits. Sadly enough Upol still did not return to Bangladesh. In year 2007 a conceptual album produced by Fuad called “Bonno” broke all previous records by him and went on to be his best produced album so far. Interestingly, all of the original songs in that album were written and tuned by Upol Islam. His “Tor Jonno Ami Bonno” went up to number one in the Bangladeshi FM Radio Top Chart. “Shukno Pata” by Mila and “Protibad” by Simin were also huge success - both written and tuned by Upol. He then produced two hit songs for well known singer Mehreen. Recently another rising star Kona sang a song written and tuned by him.
