UnrealIRCd is an open source IRC Daemon which was originally a fork of EliteIRCd. Since development started on UnrealIRCd, around May 1999, many new features have been added, modified, some of which include advanced security features and bug fixes. UnrealIRCd is one of the most popular and full-featured IRC daemons and is used on the largest number of IRC servers. Development UnrealIRCd was originally based on EliteIRCd, which in turn was forked from DALnet's DreamForge IRCd. On July 13, 2007, Stskeeps, the founder of the UnrealIRCd project, announced that the future v4.0 would be a fork of InspIRCd. This idea was dropped later on, though and it will now be a complete recode. Security Issues The tarball of version 3.2.8.1 contained a trojan that allowed people to execute commands with the privileges of the user running the daemon, regardless any user restrictions. The affected version of the tarball was available between November 2009 and June 12th, 2010. The problem has been fixed - the current tarball download is not suspected to contain a trojan.
