The School of Undergraduate Studies (UGS) manages the University of Texas at Austin's core curriculum and helps undeclared students internally transfer into a major. In 2008, the School of Undergraduate Studies was officially formed to maintain the University's core curriculum and house undeclared students. In fall 2009, UGS admitted its first cohort of 800 students. Its current Dean is Brent Iverson, appointed in 2013. Core Curriculum UGS is responsible for maintaining the University's core curriculum, which consists of the core curriculum and "Skills and Experiences" flags. All University undergraduate students complete the 42-hour core curriculum, including a "Signature Course" and courses in general education. "Skills and Experiences" flags require students to complete courses related to six subjects: Cultural Diversity in the U.S., Ethics, Global Cultures, Independent Inquiry, Quantitive Reasoning, and Writing.
