Universal Explosion

The Universal Explosion is a stock sound effect used in countless movies and TV shows, predominantly but not exclusively those produced by Universal Pictures up into the 1990s. The effect has a distinctive two-beat cadence--approximately "PFWAH-fwoom!"--and a treble, up-close sound without much in the way of "falling debris".

The earliest instance of the explosion I've heard is in the introduction to the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon. (Any info on the sound's origins and earlier uses requested.) Other examples, including the relevant object that explodes, include:

*The Blues Brothers--the propane tank next to the phone booth
*Damnation Alley--the Air Force base
*The Deep--the lighthouse
*Marathon Man--an oil tanker truck

On TV, Universal-produced series like The A-Team, Magnum, P.I., and Knight Rider used the Universal Explosion extensively. It was also heard frequently in cartoons by Hanna-Barbera.
