United Nations Music Appreciation Club

The United Nations Music Appreciation Club was founded by Cesar Giraldo(Cesare Giraldo) on 22 November 1970 at UN Headquarters. Cesar was elected its first President for that year and was re*elected in 1971, 1972 and 1973, until his leaving the organization as a staff member. A notice of the foundation, appeared in the issue of the Secretariat News for that month.
Several staff members became associated to the club, which was active for several decades, as witnessed by an entry in the Secretariat News , listing its activities circa 1990.
Along periodical music talks and record listening sessions, several world music figures were invited to live concerts at the Dag Hammarskjold auditorium. Artists such as Ghantasala, an Indian classical music performer who featured Under Secretary Dr. Narasimham as singer. John Mc Laughlin also participated under his religious name Mahavishnu along with his wife Mahalakshmi. The Zarate Guitar Quartet from Argentina also gave a recital. Don Reno and his Bluegrass group and Bulgarian soprano Penka Lamar gave individual recitals for the club.
