Unawatuna Maha Vidyalaya is the premier school in Unawatuna. The school has a history of about 125 years and now has about a thousand students.
History
The school was started on 7 September 1987 in temporary coconut shed at Sandra's estate in Unawatuna with 14 students and 04 teachers. Later, under the auspices of Mr. H.W Amarasuriya , the school where the Teachers' College was run is now called the Buddhist Mixed School. March 15, 1962 Unawatuna M.V became a Government School.

Ability
The school has many curriculum as well as extra curricular activities. Of these, the Scout team and the Environmental Pilot team are important. Similarly, the school aesthetic unit has a special place and is a great place for children to enhance their performing arts.There are music, art, dance, drama and theater. The school's dance section has won a number of regional, provincial and all-island championships.
The sports section of the school has also shown outstanding performance. The captain of the National Elle Team and several players are old boys of the college. In addition he has excelled in many sports including cricket, volleyball and netball.
