Ultimate paper football

Ultimate Paper Football (also known as UPF) is an indoor sport played by two players stationed on opposing sides of a table. The objective of the game is to advance a paper football (called an "Ultimate" in UPF jargon) beyond the plane of the opposing player's end of the table in order to score a point. The game may be played to a set number of points, or game time may be limited by a timer.
The rules of Ultimate Paper Football are elegant, yet simple. The Ultimate must strike the table before crossing the opposing plane. This can be done in one of two ways: the Ultimate may either start on the table and be slid over the plane, or it may be thrown down onto the table and then cross the plane. A specialised shot known as a "lob" consists of the player in possession of the ultimate first calling the "lob" shot, whereat his opponent is apprised of the intent to throw a lob. A lob shot must still strike the table in order to cross the plane, but must initially be projected with upward motion. The advantage of a lob is that the opponent may not swat the Ultimate out of the air until it has made contact with the table; the capricious bounce tendencies of the Ultimate make this an appealing shot for the experienced player.
A standard ping-pong table provides the most common surface for play. After removing the net, the long sides of the table are lined with a border about 1cm thick and 15 cm wide, providing for minimal caroming of the Ultimate. Each corner of the table is fashioned with a foul/fair post, ideally as tall as possible, but in practise only about 20cm in height. The Ultimate must break the plane between the posts to satisfy the conditions of a legitimate point.
Currently, UPF is played only in Fredericksburg, Virginia and its environs, though it is expected that the popularity of the sport will soon be on the rise. For instance, there are talks of introducing the game at Dartmouth College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Clemson University, and Germanna Community College.
