Two square

Gameplay
Two square is played with a rubber ball on a rectangular court that is divided into three distinct sections. The game is played with a standard 8 ½ inch rubber ball.

Objective
The objective in two square is to defeat the opposing team by being the first team to score 11 points. Points are scored in three ways (View the scoring section for details) Points can also be deducted for hitting the ball incorrectly, hitting the ball while standing inside the other team’s square, or taking too many touches.

Scoring
The ball is allowed two touches on the ground. If the ball takes two touches in the neutral zone, the team that hit it last loses the point. If the ball touches a team’s box, and then the neutral zone, they lose a point. If the ball touches a team’s box twice in a row, they also lose the point. If a person hits the ball in violation of the rules, then that team loses a point. Also, an illegal serve loses the point for the team serving the ball, and the serve goes to the other team.

Court Size and Shape
The courts in four square have an odd looking pattern, but it is all contained by the “neutral zone”. If the ball lands outside the neutral zone’s boundaries, it is automatically a point against the team that touched it last. The official sizes are as follows:
-The individual team boxes are 10 ft. wide by 7 ft. long.
-The entire field of play is 18 ft. wide by 20 ft. long

Serving
On a serve, the ball must touch once in the “neutral zone” and then once in the opposing players box. If the ball is touched before both of these steps occur, the player who touched it loses the point. If the ball fails to be served properly, then the serving team loses the point, and the other team gets the ball.

Hitting the Ball
The rules for hitting the ball are a little more complex than in four square. Basically, each player can hit the ball twice; once with their upper body (above the hips) and once with their lower body (the hips and below). This can be in any order. Also, it does not count for the entire team, so both a player and his teammate can take a total of four touches. After you have used your touches, they cannot be renewed until an opposing player touches the ball. The only limitation to hitting the ball is the fact that you cannot hold the ball or throw it. All touches must allow the ball to bounce off the body.

Gameplay
The game is started with a serve from the side starting with possession. Remember, the rules in the serving section apply to all of the serves throughout the game. The other team must serve the ball back into the original team’s square, and the ball is volleyed back and forth until one team loses the point. When a team reaches the score of 11, they are declared the winners. Two square does have a win by two rule though, so the game can be carried out as long as needed until one team reaches above 11 and is two points ahead of the opponent.
