Captain Tushar Mahajan was killed fighting terrorists at Pampore in the Kashmir Valley on 21 February 2016. He was killed in the same operation (2016 Pampore stand-off) in which another Captain had already laid down his life. The terrorists had occupied the multi-storey building which is surrounded by open space. This made it difficult for the security forces to come close to the building without getting shot by the terrorists who held the high ground. The terrorists had first ambushed a CRPF convoy and then occupied the EDI building. The only way left for the Indian security forces to determine the terrorist's location was to close in draw their fire.
Captain Tushar Mahajan of 9 Para was the son of well-known Udhampur educationist and retired principal Dev Rah Gupta and had graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA).
