Turf Tuesday

Summary

Turf Tuesday is a conventional weekly gathering of Rhodes Scholars at the Turf Tavern in Oxford, UK. Rhodes Scholars are accustom to meet on Tuesday evening, around nine or ten in the evening. This gathering is limited to term time in Oxford, although one might find a Rhodes Scholar at the Turf Tavern on a Tuesday evening during non term time, or even on a non Tuesday evening during term time or non term time. However, in the latter cases, it would not be correctly referred to as Turf Tuesday amongst Rhodes Scholars or any other scholars or non scholars.

The Question of Marshall Scholars

Americans studying on a Marshall Scholarship also seem to meet at the Turf Tavern on Tuesday evenings. That is unsurprising as it is natural for Marshall Scholars to parrot Rhodes Scholars in all relevant vectors. However, if and when Marshall Scholars gather at the Turf Tavern on Tuesday evening during term time or non term time, it has no bearing on whether Turf Tuesday obtains. One the whole, the existence of one or more Marshall Scholars in the Turf Tavern on any given Tuesday evening is irrelevant to Turf Tuesday.

History of Turf Tuesday

Local legend has it that U.S. President Bill Clinton kicked off Turf Tuesday whilst not inhaling at the Turf Tavern whilst studying at Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship; however, this is only one of several plausible creation myths. Another is that Turf Tuesday was the brainchild of a few errant and searching Rhodes Scholars some six or seven years ago.
