Trumpism

Trumpism is a term used to describe the policies advocated by Donald Trump, particularly those "involving a rejection of the current political establishment and the vigorous pursuit of American national interests", or as a term used to refer to the political ideology of persons who share those policy beliefs.
Backround
In November 2016 the publishers of Collins English Dictionary named "Trumpism" one of the ten "words of the year" and added it to the dictionary. They defined "Trumpism" as 1) "the policies advocated by Donald Trump, especially those involving a rejection of the current political establishment and the vigorous pursuit of American national interests" and 2) "a controversial or outrageous statement attributed to Donald Trump".
The term "Trumpism" has been used by The Guardian, the New York Times, the New American, The Hill, and others. Trumpism embraces concepts such as nativism, isolationism, and Neomercantilism.
Validity as an ideology
Critics of Trumpism on the political left have described it as another form of conservatism, while critics on the political right have characterized it as anti-conservative in nature. Others have stated Trumpism has no coherent set of principles and represents a permanently evolving appeal to popular thought. Still others have claimed that Trumpism is a form of Bircherism.
Some critics believe Trumpism is not any form of ideology but simply a transient set of policies tied to the political career of Donald Trump. Justin Guest of George Mason University, however, has posited that Trumpism's "allure is bigger than Trump himself". Noting that its supporters were more likely than traditional conservatives to be under the age of 40, Guest believes it will have longevity that eclipses Trump's presidency, making it more than merely a set of policies tied to a moment in time. On the other hand, several candidates who ran as "Trumpists" against incumbent legislators were defeated soundly, suggesting that "It's certainly possible that Trump will inspire a generation of Trumpian nationalist, anti-immigration and anti-trade authoritarians who will run and win in the future, but in 2016 Trumpism without Trump has completely flopped."
