TrueNAS is an enterprise computer data storage appliance based on the FreeNAS operating system and the OpenZFS file system manufactured by iXsystems of San Jose, California. TrueNAS is a unified NAS file and SAN block storage solution that supports SMB, NFS, AFP, iSCSI and WebDAV connections from workstations and virtualization hosts such as Hyper-V, VMware, XenServer and bhyve. Features Hybrid Storage TrueNAS employs a hybrid storage architecture with which hard disks are augmented with solid-state drives to provide better read/write throughput. High Availability Unlike FreeNAS on which it is built, TrueNAS provides an "active/standby" high availability strategy that allows two storage controllers to serve one interconnected storage array. In the event that the primary storage controller is unavailable, the secondary controller will continue to service connections to the storage array. OpenZFS Platform The underlying storage technology of TrueNAS is OpenZFS, the Open Source community-led continuation of the Sun Microsystems ZFS file system version 28. Open Source Platform In addition to employing the OpenZFS open source file system, TrueNAS is based on the FreeNAS open source storage platform which in turn is based on the FreeBSD open source operating system. With over seven million downloads, FreeNAS is the most popular software-defined storage operating system in the world and has a strong online user community.
