A torpedo pass in ice hockey is a long pass, usually made by a defenceman behind the blue line, that is meant to spring a forward in the neutral zone into a scoring position. Prior to the elimination of the red line in the National Hockey League, a torpedo pass was a two-line pass, and resulted in stoppage of play. It has been used extensively in international hockey.
The term was used to describe the Swedish national men's hockey team's approach during the 2002 Winter Games, which was punctuated by a preliminary 5-2 win over the eventual gold-medal winning Canadian team.
