History
At its beginning, the Top10.com site was held by Idealab, a US-based technology incubator in California. Idealab was founded in 1996 by Bill Gross, and has served as an incubator to many successful technology companies since, including Picasa and GoTo.com. In 2010, the Top10.Com domain was bought by Tom Leathes, Harry Jones, and Alex Buttle. This entrepreneurial team already had three successful exits behind them, the most recent being the UK’s biggest price comparison site for broadband and mobile phones, sold to uSwitch.com in 2011.
The top10.com domain was bought for 1 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive domain purchases ever by a UK company. This social recommendation platform included things like music (complete with a Spotify app for collaborative music playlists), entertainment, and travel. In 2011, Top10 raised $3.5 million from Accel Partners and other investors for their site.
In 2013, Top10 made a shift into a UK-based hotel comparison site, aiming to find users the best deals by evaluating millions of hotel data points - including review scores, popularity, location, and price. In April 2014, the start-up secured an $8 million investment to expand its hotel booking system.
Today, Top10.com is owned by Natural Intelligence with its headquarters based in Tel Aviv, and is no longer specifically a travel comparison site. Instead, Top10 now offers shortlists for various types of services, to help readers make informed decisions and easily compare purchasing options online.
