Tomy Thomas

Tomy Thomas was a journalist and media specialist for the Indian National Congress Party in India.
Early career and education
Thomas was born in Thakazhi in Kuttanad Taluk in Alappuzha District, Kerala, India. After completing school in his native village, he attended NSS College, Changanacherry, and Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. Was an active worker for the Kerala Students Union during his college days.
Thomas started his journalism career at the Malayalam language daily Veekshanam in 1984. He moved to Delhi in 1986 where he pursued his journalism career and studied for his law degree.
Political activities
Thomas travelled extensively in India with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He published many articles in the Congress Party weekly paper during 1987-89. He joined the Media Department of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1989, where he started AICC Newswatch, an internal news bulletin for the Congress leaders. Thomas worked as a member of the cell for the Leader of Opposition Rajiv Gandhi formed under the chairmanship of Madhavrao Scindia, and played a significant role in handling media relations for Rajiv Gandhi while he was a member of the opposition party. Thomas served as convenor of the Newswatch and Media department from 1990-1996 and was a member of the first ever Congress Publicity Committee under the Chairmanship of Pranab Mukherjee in 1992.
