Todd Memorial Chapel is a funeral home located in Pomona, CA which has been family owned for over 100 years.
History
In 1907, Walter B. Todd moved to Pomona, Ca from the Mid-West. At this point in time, Pomona was a relatively small town and was surrounding my many different citrus groves and other pieces of property. Upon moving the Pomona, Walter was impressed by the friendliness and hospitality of the Pomona citizens. He then founded the institution known as Todd Memorial Chapel. Walter's desire was to create a friendly, helpful institution, which reflected the values of Pomona, to provide a service to the wonderful citizens of the city. In conjunction with the creation of a local funeral home, Walter also became a provider for local ambulance service. Shortly after the founding of Todd Memorial Chapel, the funeral home became a very well known funeral institution in the Pomona Valley and the State of California. In 1933, Walter passed away, leaving Todd Memorial Chapel to his son, John R. Todd. However, shortly after the death of Walter in 1933, John R. Todd died in a car accident while driving one of the company cars in 1947. After this sudden death of John R. Todd, his two sons Richard K. Todd and John W. Todd carried on the family business, along with the help and guidance of Lawrence C. Smith. During this short time period, Lawrence Smith helped Richard and John W. run the business because the two brothers were too young at the time to run the company themselves. After Lawrence retired, Richard and John W continued to run the business and in 1954, a second Todd Memorial Chapel was built located in downtown Claremont, CA. After Richard and John W retired, John W's son, John R Todd became the president of the company.
Present
John R. Todd is still the current president of the company. John R. Todd's sons, Mitchell and Jake currently work at the mortuary along with Brian Pewe, John R. Todd's nephew.
