Biography
Funeral In Heaven is a black metal band based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, originally formed in 2003.
Funeral In Heaven describe their music as "hela black metal". This was born when Sri Lankan black metallers Funeral in Heaven decided to explore new paths with their and started incorporating Sri Lankan elements not only the music but in their song writing too. The lyrics are highly inspired by Sri Lankan history, ancient wars and Sri Lankan demonology. Front man Chathuranga Fonseka claims of extensive research prior to writing songs. Funeral in Heaven recapture their country's history in the Norwegian tradition, using ambient soundscapes filled with blast beats, melancholic and epic guitar melodies, and lyrics and Sri Lankan traditional musical instruments to revive the blood and grit of olden times.
Influenced by bands such as Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Mayhem, Immortal, Black Widow, Rudra, Absu, Wolves In The Throne Room, Judas Iscariot and Sri Lankan traditional musicians such as Gunadasa Kapuge, Premasiri Khemadasa and Nimal Mendis.
Funeral In Heaven went through a bit of a lineup change around 2006 as they recruited Joseph Dealwis (Ravenplague/Narcissus) and Dilruksha Siribaddana (drums) into their ranks.
Blasphemy Is Our Throne the demo CD was released by the band on 19 August 2006, at Metal Realm’s A Night Of Eternal Metal.
Once again around February 2007, Funeral In Heaven underwent a lineup change. Vinodh Perera joined the aggression, replacing Dilruksha on drums, Ayesh Perera replaced Archana Indeera on rhythm guitar, Rogger Schales (Forbidden Empire) as Lead Guitarist and Joseph Dealwis as session guitarist. Funeral In Heaven's first gig with the three new members was at RESSURECTION I, which was organized by the Kandy Rock Merger.
Funeral In Heaven's lyrical themes vary from Misanthropy to Religion and the end of days to the history and demonology of Sri Lanka.
Funeral In Heaven's present lineup comprises Chathuranga Fonseka behind the mic, Ayesh Perera and Shamika Makalanda as session guitarist, Dimuthu "Bhadhrakaali" Fernando on bass and Kasun Nawarathna behind the drum kit and Joseph "Naga Yakka" De Alwis on guitar.
They are currently working on new material for their EP "Daiwaye Haaskam Saha Paralowa Sapatha" which is scheduled to be released by the end of this year.
