TED Timed Expiry Date (also known as Timed destruction) is a legalized method used by various electrical component manufacturers to control the expiry date of a certain product by either destroying or defecting it after a certain time of usage. This happens mostly after the product warranty is void. Methods The most commonly used methods are but not limited to: Conductors: The intentional usage of an alloy existing of copper and partially non-conductive material thereby forcing the wire to become thinner to eventually overload like wolfram in a light-bulb. Material degrade: Using a specially designed process water is vaporized into a compressed chamber along with oxygen which is then sprayed on top of metal to create tiny compartments that will (given enough time) slowly oxide the part on itself. History Although TED has been a known term since the beginning of electronic manufacturing, it gained its popularity in the late 1980s with the introduction of Nokia's Mobira Cityman 150.
