Tim Byrnes

Tim Byrnes is a New York City trumpeter and composer. More recently, he has added synthesizer and french horn to his repertoire. While Tim performs with a number of different musicians and ensembles, his main musical project is called Hazel-Rah (a reference to Richard Adams's Watership Down). Byrnes is also a graduate of New York University. He is also a member of Ron Anderson's PAK and occasionally performs with Kayo Dot and Tartar Lamb.
Hazel-Rah
Hazel-Rah is Byrnes's compositions for guitar, percussion, synthesizer, and voice. The first iteration of Hazel-Rah was produced to accompany Tartar Lamb for a tour during the winter leading into 2007. A second tour was completed the following summer with Forbes Graham. For close to half a decade, Hazel-Rah took a back seat to Byrnes's other projects. In 2011, however, Byrnes reinvigorated the project with a set of new recordings to be released by Africantape Records in early 2012.
Recordings
Currently, there are only two official releases, both published through Africantap at the beginning of 2012. However, an initial first recording, released in 2007, contains the two original Hazel-Rah pieces and was for sale on CD-R only. It was recorded and edited by Colin Marston at the famous Queens, New York recording space Menegroth, The Thousand Caves. The guitar and percussion parts are played by Ben Greenberg and Andrew Greenwald respectively. Since then, Byrnes has released other songs that have been associated with Hazel-Rah, but unaffiliated to any record label or album. These include 'Ty, Protocolary, Wormwood, and Glacier. On February 1, 2012, Africantape Records re-released Kaleidoscope from the original CD-R as a free digital download as the first official release. Five days later, the Africantape EP - the second official Hazel-Rah release - was made available, also by Africantape Records, in 10" vinyl and digital download formats. The Africantape EP contains two full-ensemble pieces, also recorded by Marston, featuring Adam Minkoff, David Andrew Moore, and Charlie Looker.
