Throw Yourself Away

'Throw Yourself Away' is a song by Nickelback on their album The Long Road. This song is based on an actual story on a teenage pregnancy.

Meaning
A senior high student that lived in New Jersey was at her prom dance when she had to go to the washroom and delivered a baby by mistake. Instead of revealing the truth and probably giving the baby up to adoption, she committed homicide by placing the child in a garbage bag. She thought she would get away with it, but she didn't. Police found the baby in a garbage bag and arrested the young woman on charges of murder. Chad heard about the story and wrote this song.

"There was the girl who went to her prom, and she was pregnant but barely showing," Kroeger said. "And nobody knew she was pregnant. They thought she gained a little bit of weight. She gave birth at the prom and threw the baby in the garbage and went right back out and continued on like there was nothing wrong. She got caught, thank God." - Chad Kroeger

"It's pretty heavy. ... That same type of circumstance has occurred before. It wasn't just a specific case. It wasn't so much specific, it was just the thought of it. It's like, "You know what? The baby's already there. The baby's right there. If you don't want it, there are so many people on the planet who would love to have that baby. It's already there." But she was just embarrassed. I don't know. It's a shame. It's like, "You know what? I guess somebody should have made sure someone was wearing a condom." - Chad Kroeger
